A welcome return to grass roots football saw Ramsbury FC Senior team complete a comprehensive 6-1 win at home over a physical Spectrum FC side. The win was the first game in a cup format that has replaced the league due to the COVID pandemic and will run until the end of May 21.
An attacking Ramsbury side made hard work of it in the first half as a stubborn and physical Spectrum side battled hard to suppress a wave of attacks. However, Ramsbury scored first through Charlie to make it 1-0 and could have had a second as Zac went close. Spectrum scored from a free kick to make it 1-1, but Skips restored the lead not long before half time to make it 2-1.
The second half was all Ramsbury as they dominated play with Zac, Rob and Charlie tormenting the Spectrum defence and Chris, James, Mikey G and Adam rarely troubled at the back. Charlie got his second goal after sustained pressure to make it 3-1 and super sub Ali bagged a quick fire brace to make it 5-1 with great crosses by Jonah and Charlie as Spectrum were on the ropes as they went down to 10 men.
Although both teams were rusty, there were some very poor tackles and Mikey G suffered a horrible late tackle and later found out in hospital that he had fractured his leg and we all wish him a speedy recovery and hope the cast is off soon! Another poor tackle on Zac resulted in a clear penalty which Charlie neatly converted for his hat trick and the game ended 6-1 to Ramsbury.
A tough game but a great win and only marred by the loss of Mikey G who will ne missed at right back as he has been absolutely immense. But Leigh deputised brilliantly and all the subs who came on played their part and were excellent. Will C was deservedly man of the match as he dominated midfield and although Charlie bagged a hat trick he did get the shirt of shame for the life threateningly tackle on Sean (our coach!) that obviously had malicious intent. Although it could have gone to Zac for his yellow card and Tokyo Olympic standard dive that Tom Daly would have been proud of!? (We know it was a pen Zac – only joking!!!!)
Overall, a great team performance for Sean and the team that sets them up nicely for a tough away fixture against Cricklade FC next Saturday!
